Surface & Gimbal

Surface-mount and gimbal LED fixtures offer flexible, low-profile lighting solutions for spaces where recessed installation isn't practical. These fixtures mount directly onto ceilings or surfaces, while gimbal models add the ability to tilt and aim the light exactly where you need it. They're ideal for accent lighting, task areas, and general illumination across modern interiors and exteriors.

Types & Options

Surface-mount downlights sit flush against the ceiling and provide even, ambient light without requiring a recessed cavity, making them perfect for retrofits and low-clearance ceilings.

Gimbal downlights feature an adjustable head that rotates and tilts, letting you direct light onto artwork, walls, or specific zones. Many models offer selectable color temperatures (CCT) such as 2700K, 3000K, 3500K, 4000K and 5000K in a single fixture.

Some larger fixtures, like area lights, combine surface or pole mounting with multi-wattage and multi-CCT switching, plus features such as motion sensors and photocells for outdoor applications.

Where to Use Them

In residential settings, surface and gimbal fixtures work well in hallways, kitchens, bathrooms and living areas. Commercial spaces use them for retail accent lighting, office task zones and lobbies. Wet-location-rated models are suited to bathrooms, covered porches and other damp or wet environments, while heavy-duty area lights handle parking lots and building exteriors.

How to Choose

Start with voltage: most residential fixtures run on 120V, while commercial and outdoor units often support a wider 120-347V range. Pick a color temperature based on mood—warmer tones (2700K-3000K) for cozy spaces, neutral (3500K-4000K) for kitchens and work areas, and cooler (5000K) for task-heavy or outdoor use. Check the IP rating or wet-location certification for any damp or exposed installation. For aimable lighting, choose a gimbal; for clean, fixed ambient light, choose surface-mount. Always confirm ETL or other safety approvals.

FAQ

What's the difference between surface-mount and gimbal fixtures? Surface-mount fixtures provide fixed, even light, while gimbal fixtures can be tilted and rotated to aim light precisely.

Can I install these in a bathroom or outdoors? Yes, as long as you choose a model with the appropriate wet-location rating or IP protection.

What does 5CCT mean? It means the fixture lets you select among five color temperatures, so you can adjust the light's warmth to suit the room.
