LED Garage Lighting

LED Garage Lighting

Good LED garage lighting turns a dim parking spot into a real workspace. Bright, even light helps you check the tires, find the right socket and sweep every corner. LED fixtures also reach full brightness the moment you flip the switch, even on a frosty morning, something old fluorescent tubes always struggled with.

This page is for homeowners with an attached or detached garage, hobbyists who turned a bay into a workshop, and the electricians and contractors who equip them across Canada. It also covers auto repair shops, fleet and municipal garages and storage buildings, where the lights run for long shifts.

Garage lighting fixtures: which type does what

Linear fixtures for standard ceilings

In a typical home garage, LED strip fixtures are the simplest choice. These long, slim shop-style lights mount on the ceiling or hang from chains. Rows running parallel to the car light both of its sides, so you never work in your own shadow.

T8 LED tubes for existing fluorescent fixtures

Fluorescent fixtures still in good shape? Replace the tubes, not the fixture. LED T8 tubes come in several styles. Ballast bypass tubes are wired straight to line voltage, so no ballast is left to fail. Hybrid tubes such as the TUROLIGHT HD T8 Hybrid Shatter Proof IV Nano (13 W, 2200 lm, 5CCT) run on a compatible ballast now and can be wired direct once it fails. The TUROLIGHT VIVID T8 Bypass VII delivers 2200 lm from 15 W at 4000K and is DLC listed. Shatterproof models take a bump from a ladder or a hockey stick better.

High bays for tall garages and shops

Under a high ceiling or in an RV and boat storage bay, a few powerful fixtures beat a dozen small ones. UFO LED high bays pack a lot of light into a compact round housing, while linear high bays spread it over long work areas. The ORTECH 4 ft linear high bay lets you set its wattage and colour temperature on site, dims with 0-10V and includes 2 hooks with 2 m chains. The CSC LED LHB04 series (DLC Premium) accepts wire guards, pendant mounts and 65° or 110° optic lenses.

LED retrofit lamps for older HID fixtures

Some commercial garages still run metal halide or sodium fixtures. If the housings are sound, an LED retrofit lamp modernizes them quickly. The Light Efficient Design 95 W enclosed rated high bay retrofit replaces up to 250 W HID in an EX39 socket, with a choice of 3000K, 4000K or 5000K. A 140 W version replaces up to 400 W HID.

Garage lighting specs that matter

Compare lumens rather than watts, then check these points.

  • Colour temperature: 4000K and 5000K are the most common values here. 5000K gives crisp, daylight-style light for mechanical work, 4000K a neutral white that is easy on the eyes. 3CCT and 5CCT models let you decide on site.
  • Colour rendering: for painting, woodworking or bodywork, a high CRI makes colours easier to judge.
  • Voltage: homes run on 120 V, while many Canadian commercial buildings light on 347 V. Most commercial models shown here accept 120-347V.
  • Certifications: cUL or CSA for Canadian electrical safety, DLC or DLC Premium to document efficiency on commercial projects.

How to choose and place your garage lights

Start with how you use the space: parking only, a workshop with a bench, or a commercial bay that needs strong light all around the vehicle.

  • Light the sides of the car: fixtures parallel to the vehicle avoid shadows along the doors.
  • Mind the overhead door: once open, the door and its opener should not hide the light.
  • Plan for cold and damp: LED starts well in the cold, but an unheated or humid garage calls for fixtures rated for the location.

For lumen targets, spacing and mounting heights, see the garage and workshop LED lighting guide. For tall spaces, the high bay calculator estimates how many fixtures you need.

Automate with sensors

Motion sensors turn the lights on as you walk in and off once you leave. NEXLEDS offers a high bay motion sensor, ORTECH a plug-and-play sensor for its high bays, and CSC LED 12 V sensors for compatible fixtures mounted up to 12 ft or 25 ft high. For an LED strip under a shelf, the LUMENSTARLED PIR sensor runs on 12-24V DC.

Residential and commercial garages

Outside a home garage, an LED floodlight such as the CSC LED FLM02 mini flood (20, 30 or 50 W) lights the apron, and a photocell switches it on at dusk. The LED driveway lighting page covers the way to the street.

In auto repair shops and fleet garages, fixtures run long hours and take knocks, so wire guards and 347 V compatibility count. LED wall packs such as the CSC LED CWPS slim wall pack (80, 100 or 120 W, DLC Premium) light building exteriors and parking areas. For larger buildings, see LED warehouse lighting.

FAQ

What is the best lighting for a garage?

For a standard home garage, LED strip fixtures or T8 LED tubes give even light. For high ceilings and commercial bays, UFO or linear high bays are more efficient. Add task light over the workbench.

How many lumens does a garage need?

It depends on the floor area, the ceiling height, the wall colour and the work you do: parking needs far less light than detailing. The garage and workshop guide above gives practical targets.

Can I replace the fluorescent tubes in my garage with LED tubes?

Yes. Choose ballast bypass tubes, wired direct once the ballast is removed, or hybrid tubes that can first run on a compatible ballast. Turn off the power and follow the wiring diagram on the tube.

Do LED lights work in a cold garage?

Yes. Unlike fluorescent tubes, LEDs reach full brightness in the cold with no warm-up time. In an unheated garage, check the operating temperature listed on the spec sheet.

What colour temperature is best for a garage?

5000K is the favourite for workshops because it looks crisp and bright. 4000K is a comfortable neutral white for everyday use. Unsure? A 3CCT fixture lets you switch on site.
