LED Restaurant Lighting

LED Restaurant Lighting

LED restaurant lighting sets the mood before the first plate arrives: warm light over the tables, a glowing bar, a welcoming entrance and a kitchen bright enough to work safely. For restaurant owners, designers, contractors and electricians, the right fixtures also mean appetizing food, smooth dimming from lunch service to late dinner, and fixtures that stand up to steam, grease and daily cleaning.

This page covers the restaurant lighting fixtures used in bistros, cafés, bars and dining rooms across Canada, the specs that shape the atmosphere, how to plan each zone from the entrance to the terrace, and how to choose dimmers that work with LED.

Restaurant fixtures for every zone

Specs that shape the atmosphere

Colour temperature

Warm white sets the tone in the dining room: 2700 K or 3000 K for an intimate, relaxed feel. Kitchens and prep areas work better at 3500 K or 4000 K, where staff need crisp light. Selectable fixtures simplify the choice: the TUROLIGHT SSL-ELC cylinder pendant offers 3CCT, and the CSC LED CYL cylinder switches between 2700 K, 3000 K, 3500 K and 4000 K.

Colour rendering

Food and faces are the stars of the room, so aim for CRI 90 on fixtures that light tables, the pass and the bar. The CANOLIGHT pendants, track heads and linear blades shown here are rated CRI 90. CRI 80+ remains fine for corridor and facade wall lights.

Dimming

Dimming turns a bright lunch room into an evening dining room. The dimmer must match the driver: TRIAC (phase) dimmers for most 120 V fixtures, ELV dimmers for electronic low-voltage drivers and 0-10V dimmers for commercial drivers. Stay within the load rating, such as 200 W or 1200 W on ARANI 3-way sliding dimmers, and choose 3-way models when a room has two entrances.

Moisture and certifications

Choose damp location fixtures near bar sinks, dishwashing areas and washrooms, IP54 or better under a covered terrace, and IP65 on exposed facades. Every fixture should carry a recognized safety certification for Canada, such as cUL, CSA or cETL.

Planning the restaurant

Entrance and host stand

The entrance should read from the street. Outdoor sconces and cylinders frame the door, and a brighter host stand draws guests inside.

Dining room

Light the tables rather than the whole room: above a dining table, a single pendant centred on the table is often enough. Over a long bar or communal table, two or three pendants in a row give a regular rhythm of light. Add dimmable downlights or linear blades for circulation, and soften the ceiling with indirect light; LED cove lighting shows how.

Bar

Backlit shelves make bottles glow: LED strips in aluminium profiles behind or under each shelf, plus a strip under the bar top. RGB or RGBW COB strips add colour scenes for late evenings, while pendants over the counter keep the service area functional. On a curved bar front, the LUMENSTARLED curve tape (12 V, 7.2 W/m, CRI 90, 3500 K) follows the shape cleanly.

Kitchen and back of house

The kitchen needs bright, even, neutral light with good colour rendering to check every plate, and damp-rated fixtures that clean easily. Keep its switching separate from the dining room so cleaning crews always get full light.

Washrooms

Guests notice washrooms. Use damp location fixtures, such as the CANOLIGHT 5-head linear blade (10 W, 600 lm, CRI 90, 3000 K), and soft, even light at the mirror rather than a single harsh downlight.

Terrace

Outdoor sconces such as the CANOLIGHT IP65 wall light (11 W, 710 lm, 3000 K) give warm light without glare. The LED patio lighting page has more outdoor ideas.

FAQ

What is the best lighting for a restaurant?

Layered, dimmable light: pendants over tables and the bar, discreet downlights for circulation, accents on walls and art, and LED strips for coves and shelves. Choose 2700 K or 3000 K in the dining room and CRI 90 where food is served.

What colour temperature is best for restaurant lighting?

2700 K to 3000 K for dining rooms and bars, 3500 K to 4000 K for kitchens and prep areas. Selectable 3CCT fixtures let you adjust on site.

Which dimmer works with LED restaurant fixtures?

Match the dimmer to the driver: TRIAC or ELV for 120 V fixtures, 0-10V for commercial drivers. Check the load rating, and choose 3-way models when a room has two control points.

How should I light a restaurant bar?

Combine pendants over the counter, LED strips behind and under the shelves to backlight bottles, and dimmable accents on the back bar. RGB or RGBW strips add colour for evening service.

What lighting does a restaurant kitchen need?

Bright, uniform, neutral light around 4000 K with high CRI to judge food, and damp-rated fixtures that are easy to clean.
