Ceiling Lights

LED ceiling lights are the quickest way to refresh a room: one fixture mounted tight to the ceiling replaces an old dome or a bare bulb with even, efficient light. Most models have an integrated LED source, so there is no bulb to change, and many let you set the colour temperature on site. This category covers flush mount and surface mount fixtures, from 4 in discs for closets to 24 in models that light an entire room.

The selection serves homeowners replacing a single fixture, condo owners dealing with concrete ceilings, and contractors or property managers equipping corridors and common areas. You will find integrated LED fixtures from Ortech, Turolight, CSC LED, Nexleds, Speclite, Arani and Light Efficient Design, as well as Lumifaro fixtures designed for GU10 bulbs.

Types of LED ceiling lights

Flush mount ceiling lights

A flush mount sits tight against the ceiling, which makes it the natural choice for low ceilings, hallways and bedrooms. The flush mount ceiling lights cover many styles: Ortech double ring models in black or satin nickel (10, 14 and 16 in), 11 and 14 in domes, frameless discs, and fixtures with an ambient backlight that also lights the ceiling. Turolight RGD-FM II models add selectable wattage: 24, 21 or 18 W on the 15 in model.

Surface mount and slim disc lights

Slim disc lights install on a standard electrical box and keep a very low profile. Among the surface mount ceiling lights and slim discs, the CSC LED 12 in slim surface mount offers 24 W, five colour temperatures from 2700 to 5000 K and TRIAC/ELV dimming. It also comes in 5, 7 and 9 in, with optional black or brushed nickel trim rings. For commercial ceilings, Turolight Endura discs (8 and 24 in) run on 120-277 V and dim with 0-10 V controls.

Fixtures for GU10 bulbs

Lumifaro series 104, 190, 215, 302 and 304 fixtures hold one to four GU10 bulbs, in black, white or brushed steel. You choose the bulb, its colour temperature and its colour rendering, and you can upgrade it later. Pair these fixtures with GU10 LED bulbs to light a kitchen, an art display or a living area.

Ceiling lights with a sensor

In hallways, closets, stairwells and garages, a built-in sensor switches the light on only when someone is there. Ortech makes 5, 7 and 9 in flush mounts with a passive infrared motion sensor, from 10 W and 600 lm up to 18 W and 1500 lm. Arani offers a 7 in circular model with motion sensor (14 W, 900 lm), and the Turolight Rigid II 13 in integrates a multi-setting sensor. For commercial spaces, Light Efficient Design drum luminaires (11, 14 and 18 in) combine an occupancy sensor with FlexWatt and FlexColor settings on 120-277 V.

Slim recessed or surface mount: which ceiling light to choose?

Once installed, a slim recessed light and a surface mount disc look almost the same: a thin, flat circle of light. The difference lies in the ceiling work.

Slim pot lights are listed with recessed lighting. A surface mount model wins when concrete, joists or insulation leave no room above the ceiling, or when you want to swap an old fixture without patching drywall.

Some models bridge the two. The Turolight Rigid HS II 5 in slim flush mount (10 W, 800 lm, CRI 90) is offered with optional recessed frames and trims only 0.61 in high, in matte black, matte gold or satin nickel depending on the size. The pot lights vs recessed lights guide explains the vocabulary.

How to choose size, brightness and features

Start with the diameter: it sets the light output and the visual weight of the fixture, as these models show.

16 inOrtech 240030 W3000 lm3CCT
24 inTurolight Rigid HS48 W3290 lm3000 K, Energy Star
  • Colour temperature: most models are switchable. 3CCT models usually offer 3000, 4000 or 5000 K, 5CCT models add 2700 and 3500 K, and some Speclite 12 in fixtures go up to 6000 K.
  • Colour rendering: CRI 80 on several Ortech models, CRI 90 on Nexleds ceiling lights and the Turolight HS II and RGD-FM II, for truer colours in kitchens and closets.
  • Dimming: most dimmable 120 V models use TRIAC dimmers, the CSC LED slim discs also accept ELV, and 120-277 V models such as the Ortech FM1 0-10V series and Turolight Endura dim with 0-10 V controls. Check compatibility in the LED dimmers category.
  • Wet locations: the IP65 Ortech FM2 series is wet location rated for outdoor use, in 5, 7 and 12 in and four finishes. The Ortech FM2 7 in wet location flush mount (15 W, 1200 lm) suits a covered entrance or a balcony ceiling.
  • Certifications: look for a cUL or CSA mark for Canadian electrical safety, and Energy Star on models such as the Turolight Rigid HS and Rigid FM.

LED ceiling lights for homes and commercial spaces

At home, match the fixture to the room. A 5 or 7 in model is enough for a closet, a laundry room or a short hallway, 11 to 14 in fixtures suit bedrooms and kitchens, and 16 in or larger models light a living room or an open basement. In a garage or a workshop, the Turolight HD garage light screws into an E26 socket and produces up to 6000 lm at 5000 K, with three wattage settings and an adjustable beam angle.

In commercial buildings, condo corridors and common areas, choose 120-277 V models with 0-10 V dimming or a built-in occupancy sensor. A neutral 4000 K or a daylight 5000 K keeps offices, stairwells and utility rooms bright. Without wiring, the Bazz 7 in rechargeable ceiling light (200 lm, 4000 K) is a practical option for a shed or a storage room.

FAQ

What is the best ceiling light for a low ceiling?

Choose a flush mount or a slim disc. Lumifaro CHL models are only 1 3/8 in high, the Lumifaro CLC-2011 is 2 in high, and Turolight Rigid HS II frames add just 0.61 in. For more ideas, see the basement lighting page, where low ceilings are common.

Can I install an LED ceiling light in a drop ceiling?

In a T-bar grid, an LED panel is usually the better fit, since it drops into the opening in place of a tile. The 2x2 LED panels match the most common grid size. To mount a 2x2 panel flush on a solid ceiling instead, Arani offers a flush-mount kit.

Are LED ceiling lights dimmable?

Many are: look for dimmable or TRIAC in the product name. Ortech double ring and dome models, Speclite frosted fixtures and CSC LED slim discs all dim, while commercial 120-277 V models need a 0-10 V dimmer.

Can a ceiling light be installed outdoors or in a bathroom?

Yes, if it carries the right rating: an IP65 fixture such as the Ortech FM2 resists water jets and suits covered entrances and balconies. For a bathroom, check the damp or wet location rating on the product sheet.

Which colour temperature should I choose for a ceiling light?

2700 to 3000 K gives a warm, relaxing light for bedrooms and living rooms, 3500 to 4000 K a neutral light for kitchens, bathrooms and offices, and 5000 K a daylight tone for garages, workshops and commercial spaces. On a 3CCT or 5CCT model, a switch on the fixture sets it during installation.

How many lumens does a ceiling light need?

It depends on the size and use of the room. In this category, output ranges from 400 lm for a 4 in disc to 3290 lm for a 24 in fixture, and up to 6000 lm for the garage model. The lumens per room guide gives a target for each space.
