Built around COB technology
What makes this 1156 BA15S LED bulb different from the cheap plastic replacements you find at the gas station is the light engine: 4 x COB (Chip On Board) modules arranged around the body of the lamp. Instead of a handful of tiny individual diodes that throw harsh, pinpoint light in one direction, COB modules spread a wide, even sheet of light, closer to what you expect from a real bulb. COB is also known for its reliability and for generating next to no heat — a real advantage inside a fabric-lined dome, a wood cabinet or a plastic lens that used to get uncomfortably warm with an incandescent lamp.
Light quality and output
The bulb produces 385 lumens in a clean 6000K cool white, which the data lists as a good replacement for a 40W incandescent lamp. That cool white tone gives you high contrast and excellent visibility for reading maps, prepping food on a small galley counter, doing paperwork at the dinette or finding your gear in a storage bay. Because the whole lamp only draws 6W, you can light several fixtures at once and still leave plenty of capacity in your battery for the fridge, the water pump and the fan.

Installation and compatibility
Installation is about as simple as lighting gets. Cut the power at the switch or the battery disconnect, let the old lamp cool, press the BA15S bayonet base in, give it a quarter turn and lock it in place. The single-contact bayonet fitting is the standard used in the vast majority of RV ceiling domes, reading lamps, porch lights and cabinet fixtures, so if your existing lamp is marked 1156 you are in the right place. Keep in mind this is a 12V DC lamp designed for battery, converter and solar systems — it belongs in low-voltage circuits, not in standard household fixtures. Because it is dimmable, it also works with the low-voltage dimmers already found in many coaches; as with any LED, test one bulb on your specific dimmer first to confirm a smooth, flicker-free fade before you change the whole rig. The compact 50.5 mm x 17.5 mm body helps it clear shallow lenses and tight housings where taller LED replacements simply will not fit.
Where it earns its keep, and documentation
Think motorhomes, travel trailers, fifth wheels, camper vans and truck campers, but also boat and pontoon cabins, ice-fishing shelters, off-grid cabins, hunting camps, utility trailers, food trucks and service vehicles — anywhere a 12V battery feeds the lighting. The wide -35 to +55°C operating range is exactly what a Canadian season demands, from a frozen trailer in February to a sun-baked roof in July.
