Sealing the ceiling around slim pot lights
The vapour barrier in a ceiling under the attic keeps indoor humidity away from the cold side of the insulation. Each opening cut for a recessed light interrupts it. The VBE-4 closes the gap: the enclosure caps the fixture from the attic side and its collar seals to the existing vapour barrier, so air has no route from the room into the attic. It is a simple way to protect the building envelope and to meet specific National Building Code of Canada requirements.
Which fixtures it fits
As the product name indicates, this extender is intended for the SLMPRO8 and smaller slim recessed fixtures, while the manufacturer's spec sheet describes it more broadly as a vapour barrier extender for its own fixtures. The membrane body and flat flange give room around the light and its connections. Before you install, always confirm compatibility on the spec sheet of the light fixture you are using.
Installing the VBE-4
Turn the power off at the panel. Cut the fixture opening in the drywall and gently move the insulation aside to create space. Bring the supply cable through the opening and into the extender, and seal the cable entry so it stays airtight. Push the extender up through the opening, open it to its full volume by hand, then peel the protective paper off the adhesive mounting collar and press it firmly all around against the existing vapour barrier. The recessed light is then connected and set in place. This work should be carried out by a qualified electrician, according to local electrical code.
Ideal when the ceiling is already closed
Since the VBE-4 goes in after the drywall, you can add slim pot lights to an existing room, upgrade a kitchen or bathroom during a renovation, or finish a top-floor space without opening the ceiling from above. It is a practical solution for renovators and electricians who work in occupied homes.
Planning the job
Plan one VBE-4 for each SLMPRO8 or smaller slim recessed light installed under an attic or an insulated roof: bedrooms, living rooms, kitchens and bathrooms on the top floor, cottages, and commercial units under a flat roof. It is cULus listed, lightweight and quick to install, a small part that makes a big difference to an airtight ceiling.
