Why a vapour barrier extender matters
In a Canadian home, the ceiling below an attic carries a vapour barrier that keeps humid indoor air from reaching the cold side of the insulation. Each recessed fixture cut into that ceiling creates an opening. The VBE-2 rebuilds the barrier around the light: it wraps the fixture from above and seals to the existing vapour barrier, so there is no path for air to flow from the room into the attic. That helps the building envelope do its job and supports compliance with specific National Building Code of Canada requirements.
Designed for small ICAT pot lights
This model is made for IC airtight (ICAT) recessed lights of 4 inches and smaller, specifically retrofit IC fixtures approved for insulated ceilings. IC means the fixture is approved for direct contact with insulation. The membrane body and its flat flange give enough room around the fixture while keeping the enclosure compact above the ceiling. Before you buy, confirm on the light fixture spec sheet that your model is compatible with this extender.
Installation step by step
With the power turned off at the panel, cut the fixture hole in the drywall and gently push the insulation upward to create room. Pull the supply cable through the hole. Cut a small hole in the extender where it is marked, fish the cable inside and seal that opening with an appropriate silicone. Insert the extender above the ceiling through the cut-out, then reach in and expand it to its full volume by hand. Finally, remove the protective paper around the gasket and press all around it to bond the collar to the existing vapour barrier. The recessed light is then installed through the opening. As the instructions state, this work should be done by a qualified electrician, according to local electrical code.
Retrofit friendly
Some vapour barrier boxes must be installed before the drywall goes up. The VBE-2 can be inserted into an insulated ceiling after the drywall is in place, which makes it a practical choice when you add pot lights to an existing room, replace old fixtures during a kitchen renovation or finish a top-floor space.
Where to use it
Plan one VBE-2 for each small ICAT pot light located under an attic or an insulated roof: bedrooms, hallways, kitchens and bathrooms on the top floor, cottages, and small commercial units under a flat roof. It is certified cULus, easy to handle and quick to install.
