What EL wire actually is
Electro luminescent wire, or EL wire, is a thin flexible cord that glows evenly along its entire length rather than showing individual dots of light like a traditional LED tape. That even, continuous glow is what gives it the classic neon-tube appearance in a format you can bend, coil and sew onto fabric. At 2.3 mm in diameter, this wire is slim enough to slip into a costume seam, follow the edge of a panel, wrap a handlebar or trace lettering, while staying visible as a crisp line of colour in a dark room. LED MONTREAL offers it here in a generous 10 m length so one continuous piece can cover a large project without visible joints.
Colours and light effects
Seven colours are available: red, white, blue, orange, lime green, dark green and pink. Each wire also comes with 3 modes — always on, slow flash and fast flash — selected right from the pack, so the same installation can shift from a steady decorative glow wire outline to an animated flashing effect for a party, a haunted house or a stage number. Steady mode is the one to use for signage, wayfinding accents and everyday decor; the flashing modes are best kept for events, costumes and attention-getting displays.

Powering and installing it
EL wire runs on an inverter, which is what converts the supply into the signal that makes the wire glow. For portable use, the 2xAA battery pack keeps everything self-contained and pocket-sized — great for a costume or a bike. On a full 10 m run, however, we strongly recommend stepping up to the extended 8xAA pack so the wire stays bright for the whole evening; note that batteries are not included with the product. For fixed displays, window decor or anything that stays plugged in, connect it instead to a standard 120V outlet and forget about changing cells. One thing to expect: the pack can emit a slight hissing noise while operating. That sound comes from the DC inverter and is completely normal — the product is safe for the user. When installing, avoid sharp kinks, secure the wire with clips, tape or stitches at regular intervals, and route the cord so the pack sits where you can reach the mode button.
Where people use it
Costume builders use it to outline armour, wings, masks and suits for Halloween and cosplay; parents run it along a child's jacket for safe, visible trick-or-treating. Home users trace stair nosings, headboards, bar counters, shelving, home theatre borders and gaming setups where a flat led light strip would look too technical. On the commercial side, it lines window displays, menu boards, photo booths, event backdrops, trade-show booths and parade floats. Combined with your existing led strip lighting, EL wire adds a second, rounder layer of colour that reads beautifully on camera — which is exactly why it keeps showing up in Canadian winter festivals, school productions and small-business storefronts.
