What is a step light engine?
A step light engine is the light source module that sits in the wall and produces the light for a step or stair light. The LS-RD05HV-4K is the round RD05 version, made to install in a standard octagon or round junction box. This lets you position low mounted lights exactly where they are needed, typically a short distance above the tread or the floor, to guide people safely without shining into their eyes. The engine format also makes future service easier, since the light source is designed as a distinct component of the fixture.
Direct 120V operation
Unlike low voltage step lights that need a remote transformer or LED driver, this high voltage LED engine works directly on 120V. The electrician runs standard branch circuit wiring to each junction box, connects the engine and closes the wall. There is no driver to size, no voltage drop to calculate over long runs and no hidden power supply to access later. Control the step lights with a regular switch, a timer or an occupancy sensor to suit the space; confirm compatibility with the control device you choose before installation.

The 4000K colour temperature is a neutral white that many designers favour for stairs and corridors. It renders wood, tile, carpet and concrete clearly, helps the eye judge depth and edges, and works with both modern and transitional décor. At only 3W per engine, the energy use stays minimal even with many units on the same circuit, which is ideal for lights that often run all evening or around the clock in common areas.

Typical uses include residential staircases, basement stairs, hallways and landings, condo and apartment corridors, hotel and restaurant aisles, theatre steps and office stairwells. Plan the spacing so each tread or section of floor receives light, place the boxes at a consistent height for a tidy line of fixtures and follow the Canadian Electrical Code and local rules for the wiring. For exterior walkways, confirm that the complete fixture assembly is rated for the location.
