Built for stairs, inside and outThis is a compact recessed
step light with a white structure, designed to sit flush in a wall, riser or post along a run of stairs. The face is small on purpose — 4 ¾ in. / 120 mm long, 1 ½ in. / 37 mm wide and 3 in. / 76 mm high — so it reads as a detail rather than a fixture, and the white finish blends with painted drywall, stucco, stone veneer or light-toned wood. Being rated for
wet locations and suitable for indoor and outdoor installation, the same model can run through a basement stairwell and continue outside onto the deck stairs without mixing product families.
Light quality and the two sensorsThe
integrated LED produces
85 lumens at
3000K, a warm white that flatters wood treads and stone and stays easy on night-adjusted eyes. The beam is aimed low at the walking surface, which is exactly what you want on a staircase: you see the nosing of each step, not the bulb. Two controls are built in. A pre-installed
photocell handles dusk to dawn, turning the LEDs on when it's dark and off when there's light, so nothing burns during the day. A
motion detector then turns the light on automatically when someone approaches and turns it off after 1 minute once the space is vacated — hands-free, discreet, and no switch to hunt for at 2 a.m.

Electrical and installation notesRunning at
3W on 120V line voltage, this
LED stair light wires directly to your existing circuit — no low-voltage transformer or driver to source, which keeps a staircase retrofit simple. Plan the rough-in so every fixture sits at the same height above the tread along the whole run; a consistent line looks intentional and lights each step evenly. Keep the sensor field clear of railings, planters, shoe racks or patio furniture so movement is picked up reliably, and think about spacing on long flights so the detection zones overlap and the path is never dark mid-climb. On exterior stairs, seal the opening properly against driving rain and blowing snow. As always, wiring should be completed by a licensed electrician, and local code applies.
Where it earns its keep, and documentationHomeowners use these on basement and cottage stairwells, garage steps, front porches, deck and patio risers and hallways to the bathroom. Contractors specify them in condo corridors, stairwells of small commercial buildings, B&Bs, restaurants and clinics, where automatic low-level light is a safety feature that never depends on someone remembering a switch. Outdoors, they finish a landscape plan alongside path and accent pieces such as the
Scoop landscape lighting, the
Luna LED outdoor light or the
Pico LED outdoor spotlight — note that those are low-voltage fixtures on their own supply, while this step light stays on 120V. The full
