PL / Fluorescent Retrofit

PL / Fluorescent Retrofit

Upgrade aging compact fluorescent fixtures without rewiring or replacing the entire luminaire. PL / fluorescent retrofit lamps are LED replacements designed to drop into existing pin-base sockets, delivering brighter, longer-lasting light while cutting energy use. They are an easy way to modernize downlights, wall sconces, and recessed cans across homes and commercial buildings.

Lamp Types & Base Options

These retrofits cover the most common compact fluorescent pin configurations. GX23 and G23 two-pin bases are typical for 5W to 13W lamps, while GX23-2 and G23-2 four-pin variants suit horizontal mounting orientations. Beam designs include omni-directional models that spread light evenly in all directions and directional models that focus output where it's needed.

Where They Are Used

PL retrofits fit a wide range of residential and commercial spaces: hallway and stairwell downlights, bathroom vanities, closets, office task lighting, retail display fixtures, and hospitality wall sconces. Their compact form makes them ideal anywhere the original CFL once lived.

How to Choose

Start by matching the base type (GX23, G23, GX23-2, G23-2) to your existing socket. Confirm the mounting orientation the fixture requires—vertical or horizontal. Most lamps operate on a universal 120–277V range, making them suitable for both home and commercial circuits. For colour temperature, choose 2700K–3000K for warm, inviting spaces, 3500K–4000K for neutral task areas, and 5000K for crisp, daylight-like clarity. Some models offer flex colour selection, letting you set the temperature on a single lamp. Also verify whether your fixture is ballast-compatible or requires a ballast bypass.

FAQ

Do I need to remove the ballast? It depends on the lamp. Some PL retrofits work with the existing ballast for plug-and-play installs, while others require a ballast bypass. Always check the product specifications.

What does omni-directional versus directional mean? Omni-directional lamps spread light in all directions like a traditional CFL, while directional lamps focus the beam, ideal for downlights and accent applications.

Will these fit my existing fixture? As long as the pin base and mounting orientation match your socket, these retrofits are designed to drop in without modifying the luminaire body.
