T8 LED Tubes: Ballast Bypass vs Plug and Play

Nov 06, 2026 / By the Lumibox team / in LED Guides

A T8 LED tube is the simplest way to retire an old fluorescent fixture without replacing it, but the first question is always the same: what do you do with the T8 ballast? Some tubes run on the existing electronic ballast, some need the ballast removed, and some do both. Picking the wrong type means a tube that flickers, never lights, or forces a second trip up the ladder.

This guide is for homeowners with a garage or basement full of strip fixtures, and for electricians, contractors and property managers converting offices, shops and warehouses. It explains the three families of T8 LED tubes, how ballast bypass wiring works, what changes between 4 ft and 8 ft lamps, and which specs actually matter when you compare two tubes side by side.

T8 LED tubes: three ways to deal with the ballast

"T8" describes the tube diameter, measured in eighths of an inch. It does not tell you how the tube is powered. That is decided by the tube type, and the market uses several names for the same three ideas.

Plug and play (direct fit, Type A)

A plug and play tube runs on the electronic ballast already in the fixture. You remove the fluorescent lamp and slide in the LED one, with no rewiring. The HD T8 Direct Fit ShatterProtect tube is a good example: 13W, 2200 lumens, five selectable colour temperatures (3000K, 3500K, 4000K, 5000K and 6500K) and DLC listed. The T8 Direct Fit VI comes in 4 ft with a G13 base, 13W, 1900 lumens and a frosted lens in 4000K or 5000K.

The advantage is speed. The limit is that the tube depends on the ballast: it must be a compatible electronic ballast, and when that ballast fails, the light goes out even if the LEDs are fine.

Ballast bypass (direct wire, Type B)

A ballast bypass tube connects straight to line voltage. The ballast is removed or disconnected and the sockets are wired to the supply. The VIVID T8 Bypass VII is a typical double-ended bypass tube: 15W and 2200 lumens in 4000K, with a 12W, 1800-lumen version and 5000K options, all DLC listed.

The installation takes longer the first time, but there is no ballast left to buy, replace or troubleshoot. For fixtures you plan to keep for years, this is usually the choice that pays off.

Hybrid (Type A+B)

A hybrid tube works on a compatible ballast today and can be rewired for bypass when that ballast dies. The HD T8 Hybrid Shatter Proof IV Nano delivers 13W and 2200 lumens, five selectable colour temperatures and a 120-347V input. Light Efficient Design offers the same idea in its 4-foot Flex Color Type A+B tube, rated 15W and 120-277 VAC.

Hybrids are the natural fit for a building where ballasts are of mixed age: relamp now, bypass later, same tube.

Electronic ballast T8: keep it or remove it?

Many people searching for an electronic ballast T8, a 4 lamp T8 ballast or a T8 ballast 2 lamp 4ft are really trying to fix a fixture that stopped working. Before ordering a new ballast, ask whether the fixture still needs one at all.

  • Keep the ballast if it is recent, electronic and the job is a quick relamp of many fixtures. A plug and play or hybrid tube goes in without tools.
  • Remove the ballast if it is magnetic, old, buzzing, or already dead. Replacing a failed ballast only to power LED tubes adds a part that will fail again.
  • Choose hybrid if you do not know what is inside each fixture, or if you want to avoid opening every fixture today.

A 2-lamp or 4-lamp T8 ballast feeds several tubes at once, so one failure darkens the whole fixture. With bypass tubes, each tube is powered directly and the ballast is no longer a single point of failure.

How ballast bypass wiring works

This section is an overview, not a wiring diagram. Always follow the instructions printed on the tube and on its label, and hire a licensed electrician if you are not comfortable working on line voltage.

  1. Cut the power at the breaker, not just the wall switch, and confirm with a tester.
  2. Remove the tubes and the ballast cover, then disconnect or remove the ballast.
  3. Check the sockets (tombstones). Single-ended and double-ended tubes are wired differently. A single-ended tube takes power on one end only, while a double-ended tube is fed line on one end and neutral on the other. Some tubes need non-shunted sockets; others accept either. When the existing sockets do not suit the tube, an adapter for T8 LED tube or a new socket solves the problem.
  4. Wire the sockets to the supply as shown on the tube, close the fixture, and apply the label that indicates the fixture was modified for LED tubes, so the next person does not install a fluorescent lamp in it.
  5. Install the tubes and restore power.

Voltage matters in commercial buildings. Several tubes in this range accept 120-347V, which covers both residential and common commercial circuits; others are rated 120-277 VAC. Read the input range before installing on a 347V circuit.

4 ft, 8 ft and other lengths: bases and output

The 4 ft tube with a G13 bi-pin base is by far the most common. Long fixtures in shops, warehouses and parking areas often use 8 ft lamps with an FA8 single-pin or R17D base. One 8 ft model goes further: the LED T8 Bypass ShatterProtect tube is a 38W, 5500-lumen combo that ships with both FA8 single-pin and R17D ends and lets you select 4000K, 5000K or 6500K.

The VIVID T8 Bypass Shatterproof Nano series covers almost every length with a 330-degree beam angle, 6500K and R17D ends. Here is how output scales with length, straight from the product sheets:

LengthPowerLumens
2 ft9W1250 lm
3 ft12W1650 lm
4 ft18W2500 lm
5 ft24W3350 lm
6 ft30W4200 lm
7 ft32W4500 lm
8 ft36W5000 lm
9 ft42W5800 lm
10 ft48W6700 lm

For a standard 8 ft strip fixture, the VIVID T8 Bypass Shatterproof Nano 8 ft gives 5000 lumens from 36W. Before ordering, measure the old lamp and check the base: an R17D recessed double contact and an FA8 single pin are not interchangeable without a socket change.

One more trap: metric tubes. The VIVID T8 Direct Fit ShatterProtect IV is a metric 46 in tube (15W, 2300 lumens, 4000K), made for fixtures built around metric lamps. It is not a standard 4 ft tube, so check the length of what you are replacing.

Specs to compare before you buy

Lumens and watts

Compare lumens, not watts. In 4 ft bypass tubes, output in this range runs from 1700 lumens (VIVID T8 Bypass ShatterProtect IV, 10.5W) to 2400 lumens at the top setting of the HD T8 Bypass ShatterProtect, whose selectable wattage switches between 11.5W, 14W and 16W for 1800, 2200 or 2400 lumens. Selectable wattage lets one part number fit a hallway and a workbench. To size a room, see how many lumens per room.

Colour temperature and CRI

4000K is a neutral white that suits offices, kitchens and classrooms; 5000K and 6500K read as daylight and suit garages, shops and warehouses. Tubes with five selectable colour temperatures (3000K to 6500K) let you match an existing room without stocking several versions. Where colour matters, such as a paint area, a print shop or a showroom, look at CRI: the VIVID T8 Bypass ShatterProtect full spectrum tube offers CRI 95 at 5700K, 18.5W and 2100 lumens.

Shatter protection

ShatterProtect and nano-coated shatterproof tubes keep the pieces contained if a tube breaks. That is worth having over food prep, workbenches, play areas and anywhere people walk under the fixture. Plastic tubes, such as the HD T8 Hybrid Shatterproof U-bend 6 (13W, 1800 lumens, 5CCT), go one step further for U-shaped fixtures.

Certifications and special tubes

DLC listing appears on many of these tubes and is often required for commercial efficiency programs. For special uses, there is even a VIVID T8 bypass black light: 11.5W, 365 nm peak wavelength, 120-347V, 4 ft, for game rooms, events and inspection work.

Where T8 LED tubes make sense, and where a new fixture is better

Tubes are ideal when the fixture body is sound: garages and workshops (see our garage and workshop lighting guide), basements, laundry rooms, storage rooms, retail backrooms and long rows of strip fixtures in industrial spaces. You keep the housing, the mounting and the wiring path, and change only what gives light.

A new fixture is the better call when the housing is rusted, the lens is yellowed, or the ceiling is being redone anyway. In that case, look at LED troffers for drop ceilings or LED linear fixtures for shops and corridors. For compact fluorescent pin-base lamps in pot lights and wall fixtures, the equivalent upgrade is a PL LED retrofit bulb. Building managers planning a full conversion will find the bigger picture in our guide to commercial LED lighting in Quebec.

FAQ

Do T8 LED tubes need a ballast?

It depends on the type. Plug and play (Type A) tubes need a compatible electronic ballast. Ballast bypass (Type B) tubes need no ballast at all. Hybrid (Type A+B) tubes work either way.

Can I put an LED tube in a fixture with a 4 lamp T8 ballast?

Yes, if the tube is plug and play or hybrid and is rated for that ballast. Many installers prefer to remove a 4-lamp ballast and install bypass tubes, so one ballast failure no longer darkens all four tubes.

What is a ballast bypass LED tube?

It is a tube wired directly to line voltage, with the ballast removed. It is also called a direct wire or Type B tube. In Canada, look for tubes certified to Canadian electrical standards and check the input voltage, for example 120-347V.

Are 8 ft T8 LED tubes single pin or R17D?

Both bases exist. FA8 is a single pin; R17D is a recessed double contact often found on high output fixtures. Some 8 ft tubes come with both ends, such as the 38W, 5500-lumen ShatterProtect combo.

What colour temperature should I choose for a T8 LED tube?

4000K for offices, kitchens and general spaces; 5000K or 6500K for garages, workshops and warehouses. A selectable CCT tube lets you decide on site.

Do I need to replace the sockets for a bypass tube?

Not always. It depends on whether the tube is single-ended or double-ended and on the sockets already in place. The tube's instructions say which sockets are required; an adapter or a new socket is a simple fix when they do not match.
