What a conduit nipple does
A conduit nipple is a short threaded connector that links two enclosures through aligned knockouts. The ED-CNS-Z050 is the 1/2 in version, made of zinc and sold in a bag of 2. Once it passes through both walls and is secured with locknuts, it holds the boxes together and gives the conductors a short, enclosed route from one to the other. Electricians use it every day to extend a box, add a device beside an existing one or join equipment that has to sit side by side.
Where it fits
It works with any enclosure that has a 1/2 in knockout: device boxes, octagon boxes, junction boxes, load centres, disconnect switches, and transformer or control boxes. Typical pairings include a panel and its disconnect, a junction box and a new device box, a wireway and a panel, or an outdoor lighting timer box mounted right beside the garage panel. Along with EMT connectors, flexible metal conduit fittings and conduit bodies, it is one of the basic fittings that keep a conduit installation neat, with every conductor enclosed from end to end.
Installation tips
Turn the power off before opening any enclosure. Remove the matching 1/2 in knockouts on both boxes and line them up. Pass the nipple through, thread a locknut onto the end inside each box and tighten until the assembly is firm and cannot shift. Add an insulating bushing where the electrical code calls for one to protect the conductors, and fasten each enclosure to the wall or structure as usual. Have the work carried out or verified by a licensed electrician, according to the rules of your province.

Practical examples
In a garage, a timer box for the exterior lights can sit directly beside the panel, joined by a 1/2 in nipple instead of a length of cable. In a restaurant kitchen, a disconnect for a piece of equipment can be ganged to an adjacent junction box the same way. During a condo renovation, a new device box can be added next to an existing one without opening more wall than necessary. In each case, the nipple keeps the wiring enclosed, the boxes aligned and the result professional. Pair it with 1/2 in locknuts and you are ready to connect.
