Why a vapour barrier box matters

The boot is made of polyethylene, a transparent and durable material. Being clear, it lets you check the position of the box, the cable entries and the framing at a glance as you install it. It resists a wide range of temperatures without cracking, with an operating temperature from -40 °C to 90 °C, so it holds up whether the wall is closed in during a January cold snap or a July heat wave. Its light weight of 19 g adds no noticeable load to the box.
Installation in a few steps
The boot fits single 2 in × 3 in electrical boxes with a depth of up to 3 in, the standard single-gang device box used for receptacles and switches. Put it in place with the box before the insulation and polyethylene go up, bring the cables in carefully, then tape or seal its border to the wall's vapour barrier as local building practice requires. Its overall size of 7-5/16 in (185 mm) × 5-7/16 in (138 mm) × 3-1/8 in (80 mm) leaves room around the box for that overlap. The electrical connections themselves should be made by a qualified electrician, in line with the Canadian Electrical Code.
