LED Mirror Buying Guide: Backlit, Anti-Fog, Size

Oct 02, 2026 / By the Lumibox team / in LED Guides

Looking for an LED mirror buying guide that goes beyond the glossy photos? A lighted mirror is the fixture you face every morning, so the details matter: where the light comes from, how warm it is, whether the glass stays clear after a shower, and whether the size fits your vanity. This guide takes each decision in order, using the Paris Mirror collection in our LED mirrors category as the example, so you can choose an LED mirror in Canada with confidence.

Why an LED mirror instead of a mirror and a light bar

A vanity light above the mirror throws light downward: bright forehead, shadows under the eyes and chin. An LED mirror puts the light around or behind the glass, at face level, so it reaches you from the front and the sides.
  • Even, shadow-free light for makeup, shaving and skincare.
  • Accurate colours. The Paris Mirror models in our catalogue are described as high-CRI, so skin tones look the way they will outdoors.
  • Flicker-free output from an integrated LED driver, with dimming on the models that offer it.
  • No bulbs to replace; in a small powder room it can be the only light you need.

Backlit vs front-lit mirror: which one do you need?

The first real choice, and the one most shoppers get wrong.

Front-lit (edge-lit) LED mirrors carry a frosted band on the mirror face and send light straight toward you. This is the task-lighting option, the right pick when the mirror is your main light for grooming. In the collection: HARMONY, GALAXY, CHIC RECTANGLE, SOLA, TRIFOLD.

Backlit LED mirrors hide the LEDs behind the glass. Light spills around the perimeter onto the wall for a floating, ambient effect, and the glass stays fully reflective. In the collection: ORIGINAL RECTANGLE BACKLIT, ORIGINAL CAPSULE BACKLIT.

Both at once. Some mirrors pair a frosted front band with a backlit halo: task light on the face, soft glow behind. See the FROSTED HARMONY BACKLIT.

LED medicine cabinet: storage and light in one unit

An LED medicine cabinet replaces the mirror, the vanity light and the cabinet: the door is a lit mirror, the box behind it hides the clutter. In our catalogue the GALAXY CABINET, HARMONY CABINET, ONYX LED CABINET MIRROR and VERANO CABINET fill this role, from a narrow 15 x 30 single door to 72 x 30 multi-door units. Choose one when counter space is tight or when you already have the opening of an old recessed cabinet. Decide recessed or surface-mount before ordering.

Decorative LED mirrors: shape first

The decorative sub-category covers round, oval and capsule shapes, dressing mirrors and sculptural forms for an entryway, bedroom or powder room: CHIC ROUND, GALAXY ROUND, the full-length CHIC OVAL DRESSING LED MIRROR, and the bolder DECAGONAL, CLOUD and BUBBLE. Frame finishes seen in the collection: black and gold.

Colour temperature (CCT) and CRI: what flatters a face

Colour temperature is the warmth or coolness of white light, in kelvins (K). General rules:
  • Around 3000 K (warm white): cosy and flattering, close to incandescent.
  • Around 4000 K (neutral white): the usual bathroom compromise, neither yellow nor blue.
  • 5000 K and above (cool / daylight): crisp, precise for makeup, but can feel clinical.
Paris Mirror models come in 3000 K, 6000 K, 3CCT (three selectable colour temperatures in one mirror) and RGB (colour-changing accent) versions. Unsure? 3CCT is the safe pick.

CRI (colour rendering index) measures how faithfully colours appear. For a face, the general guideline is a high CRI, with 90 or above as the usual benchmark for makeup. Our product descriptions specify high-CRI LEDs; the exact figure for each size is on its spec sheet.

Dimming and touch controls

Most lighted mirrors are controlled from a touch sensor on the glass: tap to turn on, hold to dim, tap again to cycle colour temperature on 3CCT models. Confirm on the spec sheet whether the model dims from the touch control, from a compatible wall dimmer, or both, because the wiring differs.

Anti-fog LED mirror: how defogging works and when you need it

An anti-fog LED mirror has a thin heating film bonded to the back of the glass, usually over a rectangle at face height. Switched on, it warms the surface a few degrees above the room's dew point, so steam cannot condense on it.

Worth it when the mirror shares a room with a shower or tub, especially a small ensuite with weak ventilation, and in hotel rooms, gyms and spas. Skip it in a powder room or on a bedroom dressing mirror. The defogger is a separate circuit: one more line to check on the spec sheet.

Other options: read the spec sheet, not the headline

The market offers extras such as a digital clock, a Bluetooth speaker, a magnifying spot or a motion sensor; they vary model by model and are not standard. In the Paris Mirror range, the options you will actually see in the product selectors are colour temperature (3000 K, 6000 K, 3CCT, RGB), size, frame colour (black or gold on the CHIC series), frosted or clear band, cabinet or flat mirror, and the three-panel TRIFOLD. If a feature matters, check the Technical Files first.

LED mirror size for vanity: getting the proportions right

The right LED mirror size for a vanity follows a few general design rules:
  • Width: as wide as the vanity cabinet or slightly narrower, never wider; leave a couple of inches of wall on each side.
  • Double vanity: one wide mirror (60 inches and up) centred on the cabinet, or two mirrors each centred on its sink.
  • Height: centre of the mirror at eye level for the people who use it most; bottom edge a few inches above the faucet.
  • Orientation: a 24 x 36 hung vertically suits a narrow single vanity; 48 x 36 or 60 x 36 hung horizontally suits a double.
  • Round and oval: diameter about equal to the vanity width minus side margins; the collection includes 24 to 40 inch rounds.
Sizes across the collection run from 20 x 26 up to 100 x 45, with many steps between (30 x 42, 36 x 36, 48 x 28, 60 x 45, 70 x 32, 85 x 40). Measure first, then shop by size, then by style.

Installation: wiring, box and height

Lighted mirrors in this category are hardwired 120 V fixtures. Plan for a licensed electrician; a junction box behind the mirror, inside its footprint and clear of the brackets, where the spec sheet shows it; a wall switch and, if supported, a wall dimmer; blocking in the wall for oversized mirrors; and for a recessed cabinet, a framed rough opening. Set the height from the eye-level rule and confirm the mirror clears the backsplash.

Damp and wet locations

The Paris Mirror products in our catalogue are described as IP-rated for damp or wet locations and cUL/CSA approved for Canadian residential installation. Look for that certification mark on any lighted mirror, especially near a shower or tub, and keep the paperwork for the electrical inspection.

Care and cleaning

Use a soft microfibre cloth and a mild glass cleaner sprayed on the cloth, not on the glass, so liquid does not run into the frosted band or behind the frame. No abrasive pads on frosted areas, and never spray the touch controls directly.

Pairing a lighted mirror with a vanity light

A front-lit mirror can stand alone; a backlit mirror works best with a sconce or bar from our LED bathroom vanity lights category. Match the colour temperature and finishes, and put the two on separate switches.

FAQ

Is a backlit or front-lit LED mirror better for makeup?

Front-lit. The light comes from the mirror face toward you and removes shadows under the eyes and chin. Backlit mirrors are better for ambiance; some models offer both.

What colour temperature should a bathroom mirror be?

Around 4000 K is the usual neutral compromise; 3000 K is warmer, 5000 K and up is crisper for detail work. A 3CCT mirror lets you switch, the safest choice for a shared bathroom.

How does an anti-fog LED mirror work?

A thin heating film behind the glass warms the surface slightly above the room's dew point so steam cannot condense on it. Most useful when the mirror shares a room with a shower.

How wide should an LED mirror be for my vanity?

As wide as the vanity cabinet or a little narrower, leaving some wall on each side. For a double vanity, one mirror 60 inches or wider, or two mirrors each centred over its sink.

Do LED mirrors need to be hardwired by an electrician in Canada?

Yes. They are hardwired 120 V fixtures for damp or wet locations, so a licensed electrician should install the junction box and make the connection. Look for a cUL or CSA certification mark on the product.
