How to Install LED Strip Lights: A Complete Canadian Guide
May 03, 2026 / By the Lumibox team / in LED Guides
What You Need Before Installing LED Strip Lights
Installing LED strip lights is one of the most popular DIY lighting projects in Canadian homes. Before you begin, gather your materials: LED strip lights (12V or 24V), a compatible power supply, an aluminum profile channel, end caps, mounting brackets, low-voltage wire and a wire stripper.
Always check the wattage per metre of your strip and ensure your power supply can handle the total load. A 5-metre roll at 14W/m draws 70W; divide by 0.8 (never load a power supply beyond 80% of its rating) and you need at least 87.5W, so a 90W or 100W unit is ideal.
Step 1: Plan Your Layout and Cut Points
Measure the area where you want to install your LED strip lights. Most strips can be cut at marked intervals — typically every 50mm or 100mm. Plan your cuts to avoid slicing through a circuit section, which would render part of the strip non-functional.
If you are installing strips under kitchen cabinets, along a staircase or inside an aluminum channel, sketch out the run first and identify all corner connections and power injection points.
Step 2: Mount the Aluminum LED Profile
Aluminum LED profiles protect the strip from physical damage, act as a heat sink to prolong LED lifespan, and diffuse the light for a clean, uniform look without hotspots. Surface-mount, recessed and corner profiles are available. Mark your mounting holes, pre-drill if necessary, and snap the channel into place using the provided clips or screws.
Step 3: Wire and Connect the Power Supply
Run your low-voltage wire from the LED strip location to the power supply. Keep runs under 5 metres per section to avoid voltage drop. Connect the positive (+) and negative (–) wires from the strip to the output terminals of the power supply. The power supply mains input connects to your 120V Canadian household circuit. If you are not comfortable with mains wiring, hire a licensed electrician.
Step 4: Install the Strip and Diffuser Cover
Peel the adhesive backing from the LED strip and press it firmly into the aluminum channel. Once the strip is in place, slide the diffuser cover into the profile — frosted covers create a soft glow, while clear covers preserve maximum brightness.
Step 5: Test and Connect a Controller
Before closing everything up, power on the circuit and verify all sections light up. For single-colour strips, a simple PWM dimmer switch is all you need. For RGB or RGBW strips, connect an RF or Wi-Fi controller to unlock full colour control.
FAQ
Can I install LED strip lights outdoors in Canada? Yes, but use IP65 or IP67-rated strips designed for outdoor use to withstand Canadian winters.
What is the maximum run length? For 12V strips, keep each run under 5 metres. For 24V strips, runs up to 10 metres are generally fine.
Do LED strip lights need a special transformer? Yes — all LED strip lights run on low voltage and require a power supply to convert the 120V Canadian mains voltage.
