Aluminum LED Profile Guide: Types, Uses and Installation Tips

What Is an Aluminum LED Profile?
An aluminum LED profile (also called an LED channel or LED extrusion) is a mounting and housing solution for LED strip lights. Installing strips inside an aluminum channel provides three benefits: heat dissipation (extending LED lifespan), physical protection (from dust, moisture and impact), and light diffusion (eliminating hotspots for a clean, uniform glow).
Types of Aluminum LED Profiles
Surface-Mount Profiles — Mounted directly onto a flat surface (wall, ceiling, cabinet underside). Available in 1 to 3 metre runs. Ideal for under-cabinet lighting, toe-kick lighting and cove lighting.
Recessed Profiles — Installed into a routed channel cut into wood or drywall, creating a flush finish. Ideal for high-end millwork and architectural details.
Corner Profiles (45 and 90 degree) — Designed for inside or outside corners. Used for staircase handrail lighting and shelving edges.
Stair-Nose Profiles — Purpose-built for staircase step-edge lighting. Provide both safety illumination and architectural accent.
Pendant and Suspended Profiles — Long linear profiles hanging via suspension cables. Used for commercial office and restaurant pendant installations.
Choosing the Right Diffuser Cover
Frosted (Opal) Diffuser — Eliminates LED hotspots completely, producing a smooth glow. Reduces light output by approximately 30%. Best for residential and hospitality.
Clear (Transparent) Diffuser — Preserves maximum light output (~5% reduction). Best for task lighting where brightness is the priority.
Milky Diffuser — A middle ground, reducing hotspots while preserving more lumens than frosted.
Installation Tips for Canadian Climates
Cutting to length: Use a mitre saw or hacksaw with a fine-tooth blade. Deburr cut ends before inserting the strip or diffuser.
Thermal management: For high-density strips above 14W/m, ensure the profile sits against a thermally conductive surface. Avoid enclosed cavities without airflow.
Outdoor use: For outdoor installations in Canadian climates, choose IP65 or IP67 profiles with outdoor-rated LED strips rated to operate at -20C to -40C depending on region.
